Introduction to the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

The College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, originally known as the Department of Chemical Engineering of Baoji University founded in 1958. It is one of the colleges with the earliest establishment, the largest scale, the most favorable educational conditions and the most abundant and top-notched faculty in Baoji University of Arts and Sciences. There are five full-time undergraduate majors now, including Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Processing, and Pharmaceutical Engineering. There are primary level Master's degree authorized discipline in Chemistry and the professional master's degree in subject teaching (Chemistry). In addition, there are two interdisciplinary disciplines which are Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology. Among them, Chemistry major is "famous brand major" and "first-class major", Pharmaceutical Engineering major is "characteristic specialty" in Shaanxi Province, Materials Chemistry major is "first-class major" at the university level, and Chemistry discipline is "key discipline" and "first-class discipline" in Shaanxi Province. The Materials Science and Engineering discipline entries 2023 ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.

There are 1,456 undergraduates and 130 postgraduate students, and 14 professors, 27 associate professors and 55 teachers with doctoral degree in the college now. And among the teaching faculty, there are Teaching Masters, Sanqin Talents, Provincial Talents of Thousand-Talent-plan, Excellent Teachers of Moral-Model Individuals, May 4th Youth Medal of Shaanxi Winners, The Youth Science-and-Technology Award Winners, May-Day female models of Education labor union, the Youth science-and-technology Stars of Shaanxi Province,  and Outstanding contributions of Baoji City, more than 20 top talents in all. At the same time, more than 20 scholars from famous universities and research institutions have been hired as adjunct professors of the college. Also, there is a Huang Danian-type teacher team (Organic Chemistry), and teaching teams of core courses of chemistry in higher universities, Inorganic Chemistry (Experiment), Organic Chemistry (Experiment), Analytical Chemistry (Experiment), Physical chemistry (Experiment), Chemical industry principle (Experiment), and the Basic education teaching research team, Innovation and entrepreneurship education and teaching team, New functional materials Research and Application team etc. of Shaanxi Province. The Scientific research team “Qinling Medicinal Plant and Organic Functional Molecule Research and Development Innovation Team” have been awarded the supported program of “Sanqin Scholars” innovation team. And the “Advanced Lubrication and Protective Materials Research and Development Innovation Team” and “Piezoelectric New Energy Innovation Team” have been selected as the Youth Innovation Team of Shaanxi Universities. “Qinling Medicinal Plants and Organic Functional Molecules Research, Development, and Utilization Innovation Team” and “AIE (Aggregation-induced Emission) Materials Research and Application Innovation Team” have been selected as the Innovation Team in Science and Technology of Shaanxi Province.

At present, there are some establishments such as “The Shaanxi Provincial Chemistry Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center”, “the Shaanxi Provincial application-oriented Talent Training Mode Innovation Area”, “Shaanxi Provincial Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform Pilot College”, “Shaanxi Provincial "Spring-bamboo-shoot Plan" Project Research and Experimental Base”, “the Mass Innovation Space Incubation Base of Baoji city”, “the Functional Materials Mass Innovation Space of Baoji city”, “the Scientific Popularization Base”, “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Center”, “Postgraduate Entrance Examination Service Center”, “International Exchange and Cooperation Service Center”, and “Basic Education Workshop and other quality projects of Baoji University of Arts and Sciences”. Meanwhile, Various facilities for teaching and training students have also been offered, including an academic lecture hall, a professional literature room, a professional record room, a training room for teachers’ comprehensive skills, a three-type-character-one-word room, Microgrid classrooms, laboratories for basic sciences, laboratories for major courses, and a practice base for Normal university students and students majoring in science and engineering etc.. Based on above, outstanding reproducible teaching achievements have been gained, such as the The Construction of a High-quality and Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education System Based on Subjective Initiative Cultivation and the Exploration and Practice of the Training Mode of "Three-Think Four-Practices and Five-Skills "Based on OBE.

Besides, there are also The Shaanxi Key Laboratory of Phytochemistry, Shaanxi Provincial University Engineering Research Center of Titanium-based Functional Materials and Devices, Shaanxi Provincial Academician Workstation, the Advanced Lubrication and Protective Materials Research Center, the Advanced Lubrication and Protective Materials Research Center, the Key Laboratory of Advanced Functional Materials, Baoji Engineering Research Center for New Aggregation-induced Emission Materials, the Key Laboratory of Advanced Molecular Engineering Materials, AIE (Aggregation-induced Emission) Research Center, and Ferroelectric Functional Materials Engineering (Technology) Research Center, Chinese herbal Medicine Research and Development Center of Baoji city and other provincial, and municipal and university-level scientific research platforms which guaranteed the establishment of  an "industry-university-research promotion" cooperative joint laboratory with universities and enterprises. A number of advanced large instruments and equipment have been successively purchased, such as the NMR spectrometer, the Photoelectron spectrometer, the liquid chromatography mass spectrometer, a field emission scanning electron microscope, an X-ray diffractometer, a scanning probe microscope, a Raman spectrometer and high resolution room temperature phosphorescent in situ performance testing system etc. with a total investment of more than 80 million yuan. The college has always adhered to its central mission of teaching and scientific research, continuously deepening the education and teaching reform, vigorously carrying out scientific research, continuously improving the quality of personnel training, increasing the level of scientific research, and the ability to serve the regional economy and the whole society.

In the past five years, the college has undertaken and completed 15 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 105 Shaanxi Provincial Key Research Projects of Provincial Department of Education key projects and Provincial Department of Science and Technology projects, etc. The college has won Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Award twice, a second prizes of Science and Technology Award of Higher University in Shaanxi Province, a Shaanxi Province Youth Science and Technology Award, and more than 30 awards of other types. It has been approved for 59 national invention patents and more than 80 utility model patents.

The Faculty have published more than 600 pieces of scientific papers in the leading publications at home and abroad, including Journal of the American Chemical Society, Nature Communications, Angewandte Chemie International Edition, ACS Nano, Advanced Functional Materials, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Journal of Materials Chemistry A, Chemistry of Materials, Organic Letters, Inorganic Chemistry, 中学化学教与学 (High School Education: Chemistry Teaching and Learning, full passage copied by Photocopy of the National People's Congress), 大学化学(University Chemistry), and 化学教育 (Chemical Education). Most significantly, more than 310 of the publications are included by SCI. More than 200 scientific research projects have been completed, and the account funds is more than 30 million yuan. Two scientific and technological achievements have been implemented in Qinchuangyuan Platform and funded by the Spring Seed Fund to establish a research and technology company. The Industry-university-research-promotion cooperations have been carried out with more than 30 enterprises and institutions including Baoti Group Co., Ltd., Shaanxi Baoguang Group Co., Ltd., Dongling Group Co., Ltd., Shaanxi Fenghuo Communications Group Co., Ltd., Shaanxi Huayan Testing Technology Co., Ltd., Tsingtao Beer Hans Baoji Co., Ltd., Shaanxi Changmei Technology Co., Ltd., Shaanxi Ruike New Materials Co., Ltd., Baoji Middle School, Baoji Nanshan Middle School, Weibin Middle School, Changling Middle School, Qianyang Middle School, Huaiya Middle School, etc..

Based on its geographical location, teaching and research platform, teaching and research teams and other advantages, the college has played an indispensable role as the cornerstone for scientific research and social service by providing such featured services as preparation for postgraduate entrance examinations, innovation and entrepreneurship education, training the postgraduate students and contributing to the development of regional economy and society. It has become a key talent training center in the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering and materials science in Baoji city and the surrounding areas.

The college has successively won numerous honors including the titles of “National Model Branch for Party Enhancement Work”, “Model Branch for Party Enhancement Work in Shaanxi Universities”, “Advanced Group of Shaanxi Province”, “May Day Women Model Post of Education, Science, Culture, Health and Sports System of Shaanxi Province”, “Advanced Collective in Scientific Research Work”, “Advanced Primary-level Party Organizations”, and "Advanced Unit for Preparation of Postgraduate Entrance Examinations". The college has been entitled as "Advanced Unit" for Comprehensive Assessment for 9 consecutive years and "Advanced Unit for Student Affairs" for many times. The College Youth League Branch also has won the honorary title of "the May 4th Red Flag Youth General Branch" for 8 consecutive years in Baoji University of Arts and Sciences. In 2016, The college was approved as the “Shaanxi Provincial College Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform Pilot College”.

During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the college will definitively and strictly adhere to its original mission of educating people for the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the People’s Republic of China, and fully implements the fundamental task of cultivating people with moral integrity, andadhere to the college motto of "working hard to progress and dare to be the first". The college will still take the discipline construction and optimization as the leading task, and serve the local community as our goal to gain support for the purpose of improving the quality of education and teaching,  and enhance the level of scientific research, and raise the ability to serve local communities, and increase the quality of talent training, and focus on the constructions of first-class majors, the doctoral programs and the new master's programs in order to strive for  a new page of high-quality development in the new era.
